mcgrath-thunderhorse-v-black-sands-medium-scale
McGrath Thunderhorse V – Black Sands – 32-Inch Medium Scale 5-String Bass

Overview

One-off Black Sands variant with blue pearl mist beneath a high-gloss topcoat, alder body, three passive EMG 40HZ pickups, 12-way McGrath Switch, Tilt EQ and master tone. This is a current in-stock McGrath instrument, photographed as an individual build rather than a generic catalog model.

Why Players Choose This

This is aimed at the five-string player who wants the low-B range without the reach and feel of a longer scale. The 32-inch scale can make position shifts and long sets feel more manageable, while three EMG pickups and McGrath’s switching system let the bass move from focused fundamentals to broader layered textures.

Key Features

32-inch medium-scale five-string design

One-off Black Sands finish with blue pearl mist and high-gloss topcoat

Alder body

Three passive EMG 40HZ pickups

McGrath 12-way rotary pickup selector

McGrath Tilt EQ with master tone and push-pull preamp bypass

Roasted flame maple neck reinforced with carbon fiber

Hipshot A-Style bridge and USA Ultralite tuners

McGrath ProTec Hybrid Case included

Why TCU Recommends This

The appeal here is the combination of a less-common medium scale, a full five-string range and a genuinely flexible control platform. It is a boutique instrument with a practical mission: give working players more sounds and a different feel without forcing them into an oversized instrument.

Specifications

Model: P-Style Thunderhorse V

Finish: Black Sands with Blue Pearl Mist

Body: Alder

Neck: Roasted Flame Maple with Carbon Fiber Reinforcement

Fingerboard: Roasted Flame Maple (12" Radius)

Frets: Medium Jumbo Stainless Steel

Nut Width: 1.8"

Scale Length: 32" Medium Scale

Weight: 9.2 lbs

Pickups: 3x EMG 40HZ Passive

Electronics: McGrath Guitars 12-Way Rotary Selector, McGrath Tilt EQ, Master Tone

Bridge: Hipshot A-Style

Tuners: Hipshot USA Ultralites

Hardware: Black

Pickguard: Black

Strings: D'Addario NYXL 45–135

Case: McGrath ProTec Hybrid Case

Best For

Professional and serious bassists looking for a distinctive McGrath build for live performance, studio recording, rehearsal and touring, with an emphasis on flexible tone, playable ergonomics and boutique construction.
